The president and chief operating officer of an El Cajon defense contractor was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in prison and three years of probation and ordered to repay $60,744 after pleading guilty to five counts of filing false claims on a Navy contract, prosecutors said.

Terry Lee Hoffman, 43, of El Cajon, president of Omega Metal, was sentenced by Chief U. S. District Judge Judith N. Keep.

Omega’s contract with the Navy called for the firm to make 216 chart tables for use on Navy ships, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Gregory Vega, who prosecuted the case.

Omega failed to deliver 163 of the tables, yet it submitted five claims to the Navy in 1989, along with fraudulent bills of lading showing shipment from El Cajon to the Naval Supply Center in Portsmouth, Va., Vega said.

The fraud was discovered during an audit at the Virginia supply base, Vega said.

Omega also pleaded guilty to five counts of filing false claims and was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to repay $60,744, Vega said.
