Drought or Not?

Almost daily, a dire depiction of the drought situation appears in the media. Why then, in west Camarillo, has the ground been broken for a $150-million country club which includes 71 luxury homes and three lakes?

The powers that be also said there is an “adequate” water supply for the 162 homes to be built in Mission Oaks above Laurelwood. Included in this “adequate” supply is the expansion in the Santa Rosa Valley of over 300 homes.

It also is distressing to drive by the commercial development project on Santa Rosa Road between the Ventura Freeway and Adolfo Road and see the abundance of grassy areas which everyone knows takes considerably more water than shrubs, ground covers, etc. Even if not required by the Planning Commission, it would have been refreshing to see the developer, on its own initiative, be more conscientious.

It is a helpless feeling to have so little control over what happens in our city. It seems to be in the hands of developers and profiteers. Maybe Camarillo should follow the lead of a community in Northern California that has put a moratorium on all new residential or commercial construction until some solutions are found for the water shortage.
