A fire broke out at a lakefront home Wednesday and caused an estimated $70,000 in damage after the owner took ashes from her fireplace and dumped them in her garage, authorities said.

About 40 firefighters extinguished the blaze in the 27600 block of San Blas in about half an hour, County Fire Department Capt. Dan Young said.

The garage and roof of the home were destroyed. The roof of an adjacent home sustained minor damage, Young said. There were no injuries.

The fire began shortly after 10 a.m. when Sheena Gulvartean “took the ashes from her fireplace, put them in a paper bag and threw them in the trash,” Young said. “The garage caught fire and was raging within half an hour.”
