SAN CLEMENTE : City Commends Marine’s Widow
The City Council on Wednesday presented a commendation to San Clemente resident Carol Bentzlin, whose husband, Marine Cpl. Stephen Bentzlin, was among the first to be killed in action in the Persian Gulf.
“This is not something we relish or look forward to, Carol,” said Mayor Scott Diehl. “We want to show you that the sacrifice your husband, Steve, made is not forgotten and is appreciated by the citizens of San Clemente.”
As the mayor made the presentation, Bentzlin stood silently at the podium. Afterward, she sat down in the front row of the audience section, visibly moved by the commendation.
Diehl told her, “I hope we can continue to give you help and comfort in the future, and I hope you will ask us if you need anything.”
