Scott Sharts started the season needing 13 home runs to tie the Cal State Northridge career record.

At his current pace, the record might be his by the end of the month.

Sharts belted two more homers Wednesday, giving him eight for the season, as Northridge defeated Arizona, 7-1, in Tucson. The victory gave the Matadors a sweep of their two-game series with the Wildcats.

Northridge (11-4), ranked 20th in the nation by Baseball America, has won five in a row. The Matadors will open a three-game series at San Jose State on Friday.

While Sharts provided the offensive punch, Marty Kilian and Craig Clayton combined to shut down Arizona (9-9) on seven singles.

Kilian (1-1), making his second start, gave up six hits, struck out five and issued three walks in seven strong innings.

Arizona scored in the third inning when John Tejcek singled, stole second, moved to third on a a single by Tony Bouie and scored on a double-play grounder. So much for the Wildcat offense.

Northridge roared back with four runs in the fourth--three coming before an out was recorded.

Arizona starter Mike Schiefelbein (0-2) cruised through the first three innings, facing the minimum number of batters. But back-to-back singles by Clayton and Greg Shockey started the fourth, and Sharts brought them home with a drive deep over the 400-foot sign in center field.

Denny Vigo then singled, moved to second on Eric Johnson’s walk, stole third and scored on a double steal when Billy Owens, the Arizona first baseman, dropped the ball while attempting to tag Johnson in a rundown.

The Matadors added insurance runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

In the fifth, Mike Solar led off with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored on a ground ball by Clayton. In the seventh, with one out, Solar walked, stole second and scored on a double by Andy Hodgins.

Sharts’ eighth home run of the season--the 37th of his career--provided a run for CSUN in the eighth. John Balfanz holds the Northridge career home run record. He hit 42 from 1985-87. Sharts’ totals encompass only 1 1/2 seasons.

Meanwhile, Kilian was in command until the eighth when he issued a walk to R. D. Long and hit J. J. Northam with a pitch. That brought Clayton in from left field, and he ended the threat by striking out Damon Mashore, getting Owens on a ground ball and inducing Robbie Moen to pop up to catcher Mike Sims.

Clayton allowed a single by Tejcek--his third of the game--in the ninth, but that was all. Clayton and Shockey each had two hits, running their hitting streaks to six and seven games, respectively.
