Three Players From Region Drafted by WLAF Teams

Steve Dominic and Dester Stowers, former Cal State Northridge football players, were chosen in Wednesday’s World League of American Football draft of defensive linemen in Orlando, Fla.

On Monday, Monty Gilbreath, a former football standout at Taft High, was chosen by the New York-New Jersey Knights in the fourth round of the WLAF draft of wide receivers.

Stowers, who also played for Arena Football’s now-defunct L. A. Cobras in 1988, was a fifth-round choice of the Orlando Thunder and the 50th overall selection.

Dominic, who attended the Rams camp in 1989, was chosen by the Frankfurt Galaxy in the ninth and final round and was the 87th overall selection. The Galaxy is coached by Jack Elway, a former Cal State Northridge coach.

Gilbreath was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection as a San Diego State senior in 1989 when he caught 80 passes. Gilbreath is the Aztecs’ career reception leader with 187 catches.

He was signed as a free agent by the Rams in 1990 but was released during training camp.

The WLAF is conducting its draft of the 710 players who have signed contracts with the league on a position-by-position basis. The NFL-backed international league will open its first season March 23.

Registration for the Amateur Athletic Foundation Youth Cycling Program at the Encino Velodrome begins Monday. The free program, which runs from March 4-Aug. 17, is taught by national champions and former Olympic riders. Bikes, helmets and gloves are provided.

Jacinda Sweet of North Hollywood High has been named as the Mid-Valley League girls’ basketball player of the year.

Sweet, who has signed a letter of intent with Arizona, is averaging 21.2 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

Chris Palm, The Master’s College’s all-time leading soccer scorer, has been named to the West squad for the NAIA Senior Bowl on April 21 in Las Cruces, N. M. Palm, who had 76 goals and 83 assists for 235 total points during his career at Master’s, helped the Mustangs win their first NAIA District 3 title last fall.

Registration for the American Roundball Corp. Future Stars spring league is set for the first two Sundays in March at two area locations. Players in the seventh through 12th grades can register at North Hollywood High on March 3 and 10. Varsity registration is scheduled at 1 p.m., junior varsity at 2 p.m.

Registration also will be held at Camarillo High on March 3 and 10 at 5 p.m. for varsity, 6 p.m. for junior varsity.

Candice Schlom, 21, of Calabasas won the $30,000 Johnnie Walker Grand Prix equestrian in Scottsdale, Ariz., with her mount, Pegasus. The win was Schlom’s first career victory on the national American Grand Prix Assn. equestrian tour.

John DiSante, a tackle at Notre Dame High, heads a list of 16 Southern California scholar-athletes to be honored by the National Football Foundation on March 6 at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City.

DiSante, who carries a 3.39 grade-point average and signed a letter of intent with Washington, will be joined by Valley players Kent Dahn of Harvard (3.67 GPA), Jeff Bell of Village Christian (3.76 GPA) and Paul Stark of First Lutheran (3.75 GPA).

Former UCLA basketball Coach John Wooden will be the speaker.

Notre Dame High will ready itself for the upcoming baseball season with a Saturday morning ceremony sponsored by the Notre Dame Baseball Boosters Club.

Events will begin at 9 a.m. with a hit-a-thon, followed by a varsity/junior varsity preview game. A barbecue lunch and raffle will follow at noon.

Valley College players won the Western State Conference men’s and women’s basketball player of the week award. Art Kirksey, a 6-foot-4 freshman center, had 33 points and 33 rebounds in two victories.

Tisa Rush, a 5-6 sophomore guard from Kennedy High, helped the Valley women win the Southern Division championship with 49 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in two victories.
