Other Division II games:

Carlsbad 56, Sweetwater 47--Carlsbad (15-11) grabbed a 10-point first-quarter lead, then held the lead throughout to beat unseeded Sweetwater (21-6), which entered the playoffs ranked sixth by The Times. The Lancers got a big defensive effort, especially from 6-foot-1 senior guard Calvin Coleman, who held Sweetwater scoring leader Melvin Rushing to six points, 15 under his season average.

Sweetwater averaged 75 points per game. Coleman led Carlsbad with 21 points. He was backed by Chad Nelson’s 12 points and Kewan Shariff’s 11. The Red Devils got 11 points from Pateros Woodson and 10 apiece from Mendel Nafarrete and Brandon Tennant.

Valhalla 80, Hoover 67--Unseeded Hoover (12-10) gave third-seeded Valhalla (22-6) a game for three quarters as it trailed by only seven. But Valhalla opened up the game from the outside with three three-pointers. Valhalla’s Mark Dillon had 27 points, including six three-pointers and Mike Nalu added 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Mike Martin led Hoover, which had 28 turnovers, with 23 points and Roger Blake had 17 points and 25 rebounds. Valhalla hosts City Eastern League champ Serra Saturday night in the quarterfinals.

Serra 60, El Capitan 49--A 12-0 run to begin the third quarter gave Serra a 37-21 that it never lost. Antwann Harris led Serra (16-6) with 16 points and Tony Etheridge added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Tyrone Wiggins led El Capitan (8-15) with 14 points.

Division I

Morse 69, Hilltop 35--Morse forward Darnell Cherry woke up from his slumber with 16 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks and Edwin Charles, a 6-7 sophomore, scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. Morse (18-7) led 31-19 at half and outscored Hilltop 12-2 to begin the half.

The Tigers will play tonight’s Mt. Carmel-Chula Vista winner Saturday night. Courtney Brown led Hilltop (13-14) with 18 points.

Fallbrook 79, Montgomery 42--Twelve players scored for Fallbrook, which led 42-17 at half. Bob Nolan led the Warriors (17-10) with 12 points and Chris Miller added 10.

Southwest 82, Mira Mesa 68--Southwest (17-9) trailed by 10 points in the first half but outscored the Marauders 47-26 in the second. The Raiders were led by Devin Patterson’s 20 points. Zachary Reiff scored 17, Jerry Racette 14 for Southwest. Mira Mesa (15-11) got 23 points from Ryan Cunningham and 15 from David Butler. Southwest plays at Fallbrook on Saturday.

Division V

Marian 71, Borrego Springs 28--Fifth-seeded Marian (14-13) led 18-6 after the first quarter and were never in trouble. Joe Lagula led Marian with 19 points, JaMarr Brown added 13. Marian will play at The Bishop’s School Saturday at 7:30 in the quarterfinals.

Bishop’s 77, Victory Christian 36--Thirteen players scored for The Bishop’s School, and a 14th, Hieu Bui, had six assists. Steve Runyan and Nelson Ackerly led No. 4 seed Bishop’s (19-6) in scoring with 15 and 11 points. Brian Gregson scored 20 for Victory Christian (1-16).

Tri-City Christian 58, Vincent Memorial 54--Four players scored in double figures as TCC advanced to the second round on Saturday against third-seeded Calipatria (19-5). Jeff Lemke and Nathan Durrance led TCC’s balanced scoring with 12 points. Victor Fumbres led Vincent Memorial with 16 points.
