PLNC Defeats Idaho

Point Loma Nazarene’s Mark Ratekin pitched a five-hitter and the Crusaders (9-3) scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth in a 3-2 victory over the College of Idaho (1-2) Wednesday in Point Loma.

Ratekin (3-1) struck out nine and walked four. He also had a double. Galen Ishii scored the winning run on a throwing error by Idaho’s catcher on an attempted double play that would have ended the inning. FOOTBALL

Two former San Diego State defensive linemen were selected in the World League of American Football draft.

Duane Pettit, who played for SDSU from 1983 to 1986, was taken in the fifth round by the Sacramento Surge. He was the 42nd defensive lineman drafted.

Mike Hooper, an Aztec from 1984 to 1987, was drafted in the sixth round by Barcelona. Hooper was the 52nd pick overall. MEN’S GOLF

Aotani Creighton of the University of San Diego shot a four-over-par 77 on the Ivanhoe Course at Rancho San Diego, helping the Toreros to a 404-412 victory over Point Loma Nazarene. Creighton won by two strokes over teammate Phil Isbel. MEN’S TENNIS

UC San Diego, ranked eighth in NCAA Division III, scored victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles but fell to Air Force, 6-3, in a nonconference match in La Jolla. Chris Belloli, Chad Morse and Verne Yarnell posted victories for UCSD, which fell to 0-2.
