COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mark Smith’s Four RBIs Help USC Beat UC Irvine

Mark Smith’s two-run home run and two-run single paced 10th-ranked USC past UC Irvine, 7-2, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at USC.

Irvine (8-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bryant Winslow doubled and came around on two wild pitches. Smith hit his home run to right-center field in the bottom of the inning and added his two-run single with two out in the second inning, as USC (11-5-1) took a 4-1 lead.

Irvine cut the lead to 4-2 on a run-scoring single by Billy Bardens in the fifth inning but could not get a hit off USC reliever Phil Kendall (2-0).

David Bladow (1-2) took the loss for Irvine, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 86, Christian Heritage 79--Jeff Bickmore, who made 12 of 12 free throws, had 32 points and 13 rebounds for the Vanguards (22-7) at Point Loma Nazarene. SCC made 27 of 28 free throws.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Cal State Bakersfield 5, Chapman 4--Bakersfield’s Bill Coe and Oscar Tarre-Miro defeated Pete Bohan and Bruce Wolfram, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, in No. 3 doubles as the host Roadrunners (7-1), ranked sixth in Division II, defeated the No. 9 Panthers (2-2).
