Bo Jackson’s hip injury might sideline him for the Kansas City Royals’ season opener, team officials said Wednesday.

Jackson suffered the hip injury Jan. 13 in an NFL playoff game between the Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals. Kansas City officials think the injury is far worse than originally expected.

Royal trainer Nick Swartz said Wednesday that Jackson could be on crutches about four weeks.

Jackson, the Royals’ starting left fielder, was examined earlier this week by team physician Steve Joyce and underwent a series of tests on the injured left hip.

Joyce said the tests show a greater amount of damage to the hip joint as well as the soft tissue. Joyce said Jackson will be on crutches when he reports to the Royals’ training site at Baseball City, Fla. on Feb. 28.

Joyce said he will re-evaluate the injury on March 12 or 13.

Swartz said swelling in the injured area obscured the damage to the hip joint in earlier tests.

“It’s not just the usual pulled muscle,” Swartz said. “He’s not in the mild-injury category.”
