WEEKEND TV : Focus on the Diplomatic Front

As the United States, Iraq and other countries maneuver for a peaceful solution that would avert a land war in the Persian Gulf, television this weekend will cover all diplomatic movements. Secretary of State James Baker will discuss the latest developments on the Gulf War Sunday at 10 a.m. (7)(10), 3 p.m. (3)(42) on “This Week With David Brinkley.” Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) will join “The Capital Gang” in a look at the latest peace initiatives, today at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on CNN.

Meanwhile, Black History Month comes to an end with a flurry of PBS specials. Today at 6 p.m. on Channel 28, actor-activist David Clennon hosts this month’s segment of the series, “We Do the Work.” This edition includes a meeting between Detroit auto workers and South African civil rights leader Nelson Mandela.

Sunday beginning at 1:30 p.m., Channel 28 will broadcast 6 1/2 hours of dramatic specials focusing on the African-American experience. First, Esther Rolle and Danny Glover star in the “America Playhouse” production of “A Raisin in the Sun,” Lorraine Hansberry’s saga about a ghetto family in Chicago.

Then at 4:30 p.m., Louis Gossett Jr. and Ruby Dee salute author-anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston in “Zora Is My Name.” Finally, the 1986 movie version of Richard Wright’s “Native Son” begins at 6 p.m. Victor Love stars as Bigger Thomas.
