The United States has expelled one of the four remaining Iraqi diplomats in Washington, apparently on charges related to spying. The State Department said it summoned the senior Iraqi diplomat, Khalid Shewayish, and told him that another envoy, whose name was not released, must leave the country by midnight today. The department did not explain the reason for the action, but it was understood to be related to intelligence activities. Iraq recently severed diplomatic ties with the United States because of the war. But the two countries have been considering arrangements by which Iraqi interests in the United States would be handled by another government--a possibility that would not be affected by the expulsion, the State Department said.
