Roller-Skaters Plan Farewell to Freeway
SAN FRANCISCO — A daring and elusive band of renegade roller-skaters planned to make their last midnight run Friday on the Embarcadero Freeway before the quake-damaged span is demolished next week.
The freeway leading from San Francisco’s Bay Bridge to Chinatown was damaged in the October, 1989, earthquake. The structure has been closed since the quake and is scheduled to be demolished, beginning with a ceremony Wednesday.
Before then, the Outdoor Rollerskating Assn. of America’s 15 to 30 skaters will take at least one more midnight skate on a closed ramp leading from the Bay Bridge.
