NHL ROUNDUP : With Lemieux Sidelined, Penguins Fall Short
Mario Lemieux went out with another injury--this one to his left foot--and the Pittsburgh Penguins’ drive to the top of the Patrick Division was slowed again.
Lemieux, who has played only 10 games since last March because of injuries, bruised the foot in Thursday’s victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Doug Brown scored twice for the New Jersey Devils Friday night at East Rutherford, N.J., and the Penguins lost, 5-2. In five previous games against the Devils this season, the Penguins scored 31 goals and won four games.
Although the injury to Lemieux is not serious, the loss left Pittsburgh five points behind the New York Rangers in the Patrick Division. It was the Penguins’ sixth loss in a row on the road.
Lemieux tried to skate before the game, but it was too painful. The Penguins hope he will be ready to play Sunday night at Washington. In his 10 games, Lemieux has seven goals and 14 assists.
The victory put the Devils above .500 and gave them 63 points. They are four points behind the Penguins.
Washington 3, New York Rangers 2--Former Ranger Mike Ridley scored the tiebreaking goal with 13:40 left in regulation at Landover, Md., to give the Capitals the victory.
Dino Ciccarelli scored the tying goal and assisted on the winning goal.
Dale Hunter of the Capitals, notified before the game that he has been suspended for four games for deliberately striking an opponent with his stick. He had an assist on the first Washington goal.
Detroit 5, Edmonton 5--In his second game since returning from a drug suspension, Grant Fuhr lost his second victory when Steve Yzerman scored his 45th goal with 4:28 left in regulation at Edmonton.
In his first start, Fuhr shut out New Jersey, 4-0, Monday. He stopped 21 against the Red Wings.
