ONE CITY/TWO VISIONS by Eadweard Muybridge and Mark Klett (Bedford Arts: $60). In the summer of 1878, photographer Eadweard Muybridge had another one of his ideas. Best known today for his stop-motion pictures of horses and men, he persuaded wealthy San Franciscan Mark Hopkins to allow him on the roof of his Nob Hill mansion in order to take a mammoth, 360-degree panoramic photo of the city. In 1990, photographer Mark Klett took another 360-degree shot from almost the same spot, and Bedford Arts has elegantly mounted both photos back-to-back in an accordion-fold book that extends to an impressive 10 1/2 feet. A triumphant example of the bookmaker’s art and a fascinating, if sobering, look at what progress hath wrought by the shores of the bay.
