El Camino Real Holds Off Papa Red to Win Sire Stake at Los Alamitos
El Camino Real fought off early leader Papa Red to win the $20,000 California Sire Stake for 3-year-old pacing colts Saturday night at Los Alamitos.
Papa Red, driven by Ross Croghan, led the race until the top of the stretch. Rick Kuebler, in his only drive of the night, put El Camino Real in front by three-quarters of a length in midstretch and won the photo finish in a lifetime best of 1:57.2.
El Camino Real, trained by Larry Alterman, paid $6.80, $6 and $3.40. Papa Red returned $13.80 and $3.80 and Ner’to Do, the 3-2 favorite, returned $2.20. The exacta paid $56.
The photo finish was nearly a replay of the 3-year-old filly Sire Stake Friday night, when Bag A Few and Pantie Ho battled to a dead heat in the $20,000 Final.
