DIVISION II-A GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Bishop Montgomery 62, Cypress 46--Lupe Nava scored 22 points, but the Knights’ defense shut down the rest of the Centurions to win at Cypress.
The Centurions (21-7) trailed, 44-30, with 2 minutes 6 seconds to play in the third quarter before Nava, a 5-9 junior, sparked a 10-0 run with two consecutive three-point plays. That cut the lead to 44-40.
But with 6:52 left to play, Nava, who finished with 17 rebounds, two blocks and two steals, fouled out of the game going for a rebound. Cypress was outscored, 22-6, the rest of the game.
“Lupe’s leaving really hurt us. She carried us all night and we had some momentum, but we couldn’t recover,” Cypress Coach Denise Selbe said. Bishop Montgomery (23-4) was led by Mirien Martinez with 21 points. The Knights, who held Cypress senior Frances Oda to a season-low six points, used a fast-break style to beat the Centurions.
