DIVISION I-A GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Cerritos 66, Marina 65-- Cerritos’ 5-foot-3 point guard Yvette Fujimura made a 15-foot jumper from the right base line with two seconds remaining to knock the undefeated Sunset League champions out of the playoffs.
Marina’s 55-foot desperation shot by Gillian Bean at the buzzer bounced harmlessly off the backboard, ending the Lady Vikings’ 14-game winning streak, and the most successful Marina girls’ basketball season ever at 23-5.
Although Cerritos threatened to blow Marina out of the game in the second quarter, using an 8-0 run to take a 31-21 lead with a minute to play in the half, Bean brought Marina back in the second half.
Bean scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the third quarter, including three three-pointers, as the Lady Vikings outscored Cerritos, 21-8, in the period to take a 47-39 lead heading into the final period.
Marina nursed a 63-59 lead with 1:24 to play, but the Lady Vikings missed five of their final seven free-throws, including the front ends of three one-and-one situations.
Colleen Hatch scored 15 points for Marina, while Aimee Periolat added 14 points off the bench.
Cerritos received balanced scoring with Nikki Luke scoring a team-high 13 points, Fujimura 12, Shannon Perry 11, and Amy Hughlett and Marja Miller 10 each.
