Pilots Ratify Pact: Leaders of American Airlines’ pilots union ratified a four-year contract following two days of meetings. The directors of the Allied Pilots Assn. approved the contract by an 18-2 vote, ending a 16-month feud with the airline that sometimes turned publicly bitter. Under the new contract, which would replace the one that expired more than a year ago, pilots would receive an immediate 8% pay raise, followed by 4% increases on Aug. 31, 1991, 1992 and 1993. The new contract also calls for a reduction in the time it takes an American pilot to reach the company’s highest pay scale, from nine to six years.
