California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Corrections, CYA Leaders Appointed
Gov. Pete Wilson on Tuesday appointed B. T. Collins, onetime chief aide to former Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr., to head the California Youth Authority and named Santa Clara County Deputy Executive James Gomez as Corrections Department director. Collins, 50, was Brown’s chief of staff from 1981 to 1983, the last years that the Democrat was governor. He also served as director of the California Conservation Corps and as chief deputy to former Treasurer Tom Hayes. Gomez, 41, was chief deputy director of the Corrections Department from 1983 to 1989 and served in various posts in the Department of Social Services from 1977 to 1983. Both are Republicans.
