Outfielder Rickey Henderson, apparently upset because the Oakland Athletics haven’t renegotiated his contract, was the only no-show at the team’s Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College training camp Wednesday.

Henderson, the most valuable player in the American League last year, signed a four-year, $12-million contract shortly after the 1989 season ended. Since then many players have signed for much more.

“I’m not terribly surprised Rickey’s not here because of an undercurrent of unhappiness about his contract,” General Manager Sandy Alderson said. “We have a number of players in camp who are very good players. Maybe not MVPs, but who have performed well over the years. Unfortunately, we have to live with the system. These types of dramatic changes in the marketplace have occurred.”

The Toronto Blue Jays have renegotiated Dave Stieb’s contract. Stieb, 33, was scheduled to make $1.7 million in 1991 under a deal agreed to on March 8, 1985. But Bob Lamonte, Stieb’s agent, said the right-hander will average about $3.25 million for the 1991, ’92 and ’93 seasons. . . . Frank Viola tested his ailing left elbow and said his arm “felt great.” Viola, who earlier in the week was found to have bone spurs in the elbow, said he believes he can avoid surgery for now. . . . Catcher Benito Santiago arrived at the San Diego Padres spring training camp still troubled over the club’s failure to sign him to a multiyear deal. Santiago, who lost his arbitration case and had to settle for a 1991 salary of $1.65 million, said: “I’ll just take it like a man.” . . . Ken Griffey Jr. was the only no-show as the Seattle Mariners held their first full-squad workout. But it had nothing to do with ongoing contract talks. Griffey, the Mariners’ All-Star center fielder, flew back to Seattle late Tuesday after a series of apparent break-ins at his home. . . . Center fielder Roberto Kelly remained in his native Panama while the New York Yankees had their first full-squad workout in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Pascual Perez continued to be absent seven days after he was due to report. Perez has been detained by visa problems in the Dominican Republic.
