Countywide : Walking Tour of Battlefield Offered
In March, 1838, small armies from Northern and Southern California faced off in the two-day Battle of San Buenaventura in a bid to settle who would rule the state.
The story of that almost bloodless encounter, which the army of the north won, will be related for those who join a one-hour walking tour today at the Albinger Archaeological Museum in Ventura.
Excavated cannonballs will be displayed as well as replicas of the guns used and of the flag proclaiming independence from Mexico that was raised over Mission San Buenaventura. Spots where the cannons were set up and the armies maneuvered will be pointed out as visitors tour the grounds of the museum, the mission and Mission Park.
Assistant museum Manager Shirley Sager will lead the free tour starting at 1 p.m. The museum is at 113 E. Main St., Ventura.
