LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

The Ventura County edition of the Los Angeles Times marks a special day on Tuesday. It is our first birthday.

On March 12, 1990, The Times published the first seven-day-a-week edition for this county. I went back and looked at that inaugural newspaper last week to see what we chose for our lead Ventura County story.

Across the top of the page, the headline said it all: “MWD May Order Plan for Water Cutbacks.”

It is tempting to say that a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. But, of course, not much water has flowed at all. And just as Times staff reporter Joanna M. Miller predicted a year ago, the Metropolitan Water District and other agencies are, indeed, ordering us to cut back water use.

Day in and day out, our reporters have tried to stay ahead of just that kind of news. That is why readers like you are Ventura County’s best-informed.

Thank you for your trust and your support in our first year. Thank you also for your suggestions and news tips, for your criticisms and your accolades.

We will work just as hard in Year Two to keep you ahead of the news.
