Mandela and Rival Buthelezi to Meet
From Reuters
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
Nelson Mandela, deputy president of the African National Congress, will meet his main rival, Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi, president of the Inkatha Freedom Party, today in a renewed attempt to end South Africa’s townships war.
The country’s two most powerful black politicians will meet at a luxury hotel in the Indian Ocean port of Durban to discuss “the current tragic violence,” Inkatha spokeswoman Suzanne Vos said Friday.
It will be only their second meeting since ANC-Inkatha fighting spread from Natal province to Johannesburg last August.
