About 200 people were evacuated from the first two floors of the downtown U.S. Courthouse on Monday as the Metro Arson Strike Team examined a package sent to a judge, authorities said.
Investigators responded about 2:30 p.m. to a report that a suspicious package had been received by a judge in his first-floor Front Street office, according to Capt. Jim Smidt of the arson detail. The judge said he hadn’t expected the package, and that the sender had misspelled his name, Smidt added.
An X-ray of the package showed there was a videotape inside, which was confirmed when technicians opened the package, Smidt said.
