A police officer who thought she had seen the last of a car and its two occupants after they drove off during traffic stop received a smashing surprise moments later.

Officer Suzie Barney pulled the car over about 2:30 p.m. Monday and discovered that the license and the vehicle failed to match, Sgt. Mike Gibbs said. Barney asked for the ignition key. The driver, a large woman in leopard tights, handed the officer a key. But, when Barney attempted to get the vehicle’s identification number, the car sped off.

Moments later, as Barney was driving around the area, the car ran a stop sign and plowed into her police cruiser at 22nd and C Streets in Golden Hill, Gibbs said. The driver may have been looking behind her for Barney’s police car at the time, Gibbs added.

Police said the vehicle that hit the police car was stolen.

Barney and the two occupants of the stolen car were treated for minor injuries, Gibbs said.
