Man Killed in Chase, Shootout With Police
A man who fired his gun at officers before and during a chase through a neighborhood in the west part of Long Beach was killed by police, authorities said Monday.
Two police officers patrolling an alley north of Parade Street and west of Canal Street about 5 p.m. Sunday saw a man crouching in front of a vehicle and ordered him to stand up. The unidentified man fired several shots at the officers, Lt. Bob Pitus said.
The man ran south toward Pacific Coast Highway, with the two officers chasing him through several back yards and the grounds of a motel at 1626 W. Esther St. When the fleeing man fired a gun at a third officer who had climbed to the roof of the motel, that officer’s partner on the ground, Officer Dave Frazier, 39, a 9 1/2-year veteran, ordered the man to drop the gun. The man allegedly refused, and Frazier shot him. The man died soon after at St. Mary’s Hospital in Long Beach, Pitus said.
