HUNTINGTON BEACH : Man Arrested, 4 Injured in 2 Crashes
Two unrelated traffic accidents left four people injured and resulted in the arrest of a man on suspicion of hit-and-run and drunk driving, authorities said.
The injuries to the victims did not appear to be life-threatening, Police Lt. Ed McErlain said.
The first accident occurred about 11:45 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Delaware streets when a motorist traveling north on Delaware was struck by a vehicle going south on Main, McErlain said.
The two drivers, a 43-year-old Fountain Valley woman and a 76-year-old Huntington Beach man, were flown by helicopter to local hospitals. No other information was immediately available.
Less than an hour later, a motorcyclist and his passenger slammed into the side of a Dodge sedan that had made an illegal left turn in front of them at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Nichols Street, McErlain said.
“The driver of the Dodge failed to yield to the motorcycle,” McErlain said.
After the collision, the driver of the Dodge put the car in reverse and accidentally ran over one of the victims, he said. At that point, the driver fled the scene on foot.
A bystander chased the driver and held him until the police arrived and took him into custody, police said.
The driver, identified as Francisco Ocampos, 24, of Huntington Beach, was booked at Huntington Beach City Jail on suspicion of felony drunk driving and hit-and-run, McErlain said.
The victims, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both of Huntington Beach, were taken by helicopter to the UCI Medical Center in Orange, police said.
