Nation IN BRIEF : NORTH DAKOTA : Limits on Abortion Vetoed as ‘Abuse’
North Dakota Gov. George Sinner rejected what would have been the strictest abortion law in the nation. The bill would have banned termination of pregnancy except if it resulted from rape or incest or endangered the mother’s life. “History is full of accounts of the misuse of governmental power, often for a ‘good’ cause,” Sinner, a Democrat and a Roman Catholic who is the father of 10, said in his veto message. “Such abuse must be resisted vigorously on both sides. Government must not overstep its bounds. It must not play God.” Although he personally opposes abortion, he had said earlier that the bill went “too far.” The measure goes back to the state House of Representatives. Rep. Richard Kloubec, the Republican House majority leader, said an override vote could be held today but likely will be delayed until Wednesday.
