Mike Seal
School: Irvine High
Sport: Baseball
Position: Pitcher/right fielder
Class: Senior
After reaching base seven consecutive times in Irvine’s first two games last week, Seal raised expectations so high that his teammates kidded him when the streak ended with a sacrifice fly. It was the kind of week in which nearly nothing went wrong for Seal, whose pitching and hitting helped the Vaqueros win three games in the Santa Ana Elks tournament. At the plate, Seal, who will attend Loyola Marymount on a baseball scholarship this fall, was six for eight with five doubles and a home run. On the mound, he pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12, as Irvine defeated Gahr, 5-2, in the semifinals. He also pitched one inning of relief--striking out the side--in a 12-1 victory over Century. He is batting .444 with a .585 on-base percentage and has a 1.31 earned-run average.
Other top performers:
Keith McDonald, who had a victory and a save for Esperanza and was named the most valuable pitcher of the Upper Deck Classic.
David Newhan and Rich Hills, who helped Esperanza to the championship of the Upper Deck Classic. Newhan, who was named the offensive player of the tournament, gave Esperanza the lead in the title game with a two-run triple, and Hills had three hits and drove in five runs in the final.
