Qantas to Lay Off Up to 5,000: Australia’s international airline said it will lay off from 3,500 to 5,000 employees due to continued operating losses. Qantas, which employs 17,000 workers, has forecast an operating loss of $273 million (350 million Australian dollars) in the fiscal year that ends June 30. Qantas has been hit hard by the increased cost of aviation fuel and the general recession in Australia.
