Latino Named Inglewood Fire Chief
Julian G. Ysais, a 20-year veteran with the Inglewood Fire Department, was named the city’s new fire chief this week, becoming the first Latino to hold the post.
Ysais, 47, who has been battalion chief for the past six years, said his goal is to promote more blacks and Latinos into management positions. Ysais is the only Latino officer, and there is one black captain. Forty percent of the rank-and-file firefighters are members of ethnic minority groups.
Ysais is past president of the Inglewood Firemens’ Assn. and a nine-year member of the association’s board of directors. He has an associate’s degree in business management and an occupational certificate in fire science from Los Angeles Valley College.
Ysais, who will receive $85,000 a year, succeeds Robert R. Hartzog, who retired last December after five years as head of the 87-person department.
