Moorpark’s first hotel moved one step closer to reality Monday when the Moorpark Planning Commission recommended that the City Council approve a $9-million building proposed by Oxnard developer Martin V. Smith & Associates.

Although water and drainage problems still need to be worked out, construction of the 135-room hotel and 5,100-square-foot restaurant was praised by residents and business leaders at the Planning Commission meeting.

Moorpark business leaders urged the commission to approve the project, saying it would rejuvenate the city’s downtown.

“The hotel will help the downtown shopping to improve,” said businessman Abe Guny. “We are really hurting.”

The hotel is expected to be completed within five years, said Mitch Kahn, a spokesman for the developer.
