OXNARD : Parents Protest Plan to Cut 13 Specialists
More than 50 parents and teachers praised Oxnard Elementary School District’s 13 reading and language specialists Wednesday night and objected to a proposal to eliminate their jobs to save the district money.
Parents and teachers told the school board that they understand the district is grappling with a $3.1-million deficit. But they urged that the cuts not affect the classroom, particularly the successful reading program.
Carmen Sanchez said she couldn’t stress more strongly that the board keep the reading specialists. “I have an 8-year-old daughter,” she said. “She did not know how to read. If it wasn’t for the program, my daughter would not be able to read today.”
The reading and language arts specialists work at the district’s elementary schools helping teachers with kindergartners, and first- and second-graders with reading disabilities.
“The program has merit,” said Dee Chavez, a teacher at Curren School. “I hope you take that into consideration.”
