Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON : Korbut Apparently Not Hurt by Fallout
A physician examined Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut and her family and said there are no immediate signs that they suffered health problems from radioactive fallout during the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Korbut, the darling of the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, arrived in Seattle with her husband and their 12-year-old son for tests at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Korbut also is in Seattle to promote a foundation that she and the cancer center are starting to aid victims of the April, 1986, Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Korbut and her family lived in Minsk, 180 miles away, when Chernobyl spewed radioactive materials into the atmosphere.
