PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Brown’s Heroics in Eighth Cap El Modena’s Victory Over Santa Ana Valley, 5-4
Gavin Brown tripled and scored on an errant pickoff throw in the top of the eighth inning to give El Modena a 5-4 victory over Santa Ana Valley Wednesday in a Century League baseball game.
Santa Ana Valley scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead, but El Modena sent the game into extra innings by tying the game, 4-4, with one run in the seventh.
Chad Henderson, who scored three runs, walked to lead off the seventh. He stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Jason Wakefield’s single.
Brad Givens pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Darren Knudson to earn the victory for El Modena (6-3, 3-1 in league).
In other Century League games:
Villa Park 4, Orange 3--Villa Park’s Aaron Boone hit a leadoff home run in the first inning and earned his third save after striking out the last batter of the game with the tying run on second.
Danny Strapp’s fourth-inning sacrifice fly provided the winning margin for host Villa Park (7-6, 4-0).
Foothill 5, Canyon 3--Clint Pearson had three hits, scored and had one RBI for host Foothill (5-7, 2-2). Tom Scardino (2-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out four and walking three.
In the Freeway League:
Troy 8, Sonora 7--Trailing, 7-6, with two out in the sixth, Troy won when Brent Locher doubled off the screen in left field to drive in Ryan Russell and Brent Coon with the tying and winning runs.
Jay Foust, who had three hits, hit a three-run home run to give Sonora a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Steve Friedrich hit his seventh home run of the season for Troy, a three-run homer, to tie the score, 5-5, in the fourth.
Coon hit a bases-empty home run in the first inning for Troy (8-2, 3-1). Tracy Coffman had three hits and scored for Sonora.
Sunny Hills 11, La Habra 2--Rick Orr (2-1) pitched an eight-hitter, struck out seven and walked two for visiting Sunny Hills (9-3, 4-0). Chris Looney had two hits and three RBIs and Steve Ashton had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs for Sunny Hills.
In the Garden Grove League:
Pacifica 5, Los Amigos 3--Dan Murray and Jeff Wozniak each had a run-scoring double and Chris Costellano had a two-run single as visiting Pacifica (8-8, 2-2) scored four runs in the first inning.
In the Orange League:
Anaheim 10, Magnolia 3--Anaheim (6-7, 3-1) had an eight-run fifth inning on six consecutive hits and three errors by Magnolia (3-1 in league).
Valencia 6, Brea-Olinda 4--Ryan Roskelly hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give visiting Valencia (6-5, 3-1) a 4-1 lead. Brea-Olinda is 7-7, 3-1.
A relay throw from Valencia left fielder Jordan Fisher to shortstop Craig Irion and then another to catcher Harold Ceron got the potential tying run at the plate in the sixth. Eric Vasquez came in to pick up the save for Valencia (3-1, 6-5).
In the Sea View League:
Saddleback 7, Woodbridge 2--George Madrid had three hits and two RBIs for Saddleback. Scott Coker had a two-run triple for host Woodbridge (3-5, 1-3).
Tustin 13, Newport Harbor 2--Andy Gonzales (3-1) pitched four innings, allowing four hits and striking out five, for host Tustin (9-4, 4-0). Ben Munoz had two hits and three RBIs for Tustin.
University 1, Corona del Mar 0--Steve Archer and Ryan Bouchard combined on a four-hitter for host University (4-11, 1-3). The Trojans scored in the first inning after Brian Vail singled, took third on Steve Hagins’ single, and scored after Brian Schappert grounded into a fielder’s choice.
In nonleague baseball:
Marina 5, Santa Margarita 2--Sean Connors had two hits and an RBI for host Marina (7-6). After Marina scored three runs in the first inning to give winning pitcher Dean Soto (3-1) an early lead, Nick St. George pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for the save.
