A man attempting to start his stalled pickup on the shoulder of Interstate 805 Thursday morning was killed when he was struck by a vehicle driven onto the shoulder, CHP officers said.
Thomas Gene Roth, 35, who lived in the 1400 block of Hemlock Avenue, Imperial Beach, was pronounced dead about 3 a.m. of multiple injuries received at the accident scene, the county medical examiner’s office confirmed.
Roth was attempting to start his stalled truck, standing on the inside of the right shoulder on northbound I-805 near the Logan Avenue overpass when he was struck by a van that had strayed onto a dirt area to the right of the shoulder, said CHP Officer Larry Urban.
Ramiro Severino Morales-Juarez, 23, of Chula Vista, the driver of the van, was not hurt in the accident.
The case will automatically be reviewed for possible misdemeanor manslaughter charges, but there was no indication of gross negligence, Urban said.
