BREA : City Denies Claim From Developer
The City Council this week refused to pay damages to developer Don McBride for a failed business deal, a move that could result in a lawsuit against the city.
The council decided Tuesday night to reject McBride’s claim for damages against the city over a 7.5-acre commercial center on Brea Boulevard. McBride filed a claim last month after the council ended yearlong negotiations over the site. The negotiations were halted after it was discovered that Councilman Ron Isles may have had a conflict of interest because he is a business partner of McBride.
Asking for an unspecified amount of damages, the claim states McBride suffered financially when the council awarded the project to another developer. McBride says a portion of the center had already been leased and that he had put at least $100,000 into the project.
City Atty. James L. Markman said McBride’s allegations, including that the city had violated open-meeting laws, are not true.
