Race Bias Complaint Filed Against Spanish Network
Attorney Gloria Allred on Thursday filed a race discrimination complaint with the Federal Communications Commission against Univision Inc., a Miami-based Spanish-language television network with an office in West Hollywood.
The complaint was filed on behalf of Jorge Elias of Los Angeles, who in 1989 produced two Spanish-language pilots for possible purchase by Univision. Elias claims the shows were rejected because some of the cast members were black. One of those cast members--Francisca Sanchez--has joined in filing the complaint.
“I feel insulted and outraged because Univision judged me not by the quality of my performance but by the color of my skin,” Sanchez said. “My indignation does not permit me to remain silent in the face of this discrimination.”
The complaint also charges that another Univision program, “Chispas de Chocolate,” was taken off the air because the entire cast was black.
