Solving State’s Water Shortage
So! All the public water czars speak with a single voice: No matter how much rain we get, it won’t be enough; we must continue the rationing and the excess-use fines indefinitely! From their tone of voice, one suspects that 40 days and nights of rain wouldn’t be enough to lift the restrictions. Please pardon my low level of faith, but I can’t dispel some nagging doubts about their motivation.
First, the fines--more money rolling in, no additional overhead or capital expense. Small wonder they’d like to keep that going as long as possible. A very profitable business, this, and it acts like a new tax we didn’t get to vote on.
Second, as rationing continues, the water districts cheerfully raise the rates of the nonexcessive amounts of water we use. After all, unlike a private business, they’re entitled to stay in business at our expense, no matter what, aren’t they?
Finally, has it occurred to anybody else that periods of water famine are the only time the water people are important? DAVE GATER
