Car Crash Triggers Blackout in Santa Ana

A driver hit a power pole at the intersection of Main Street and Buffalo Avenue on Friday night, leaving about 1,700 Southern California Edison customers without power for a short time.

Some of those affected by the blackout had power back within half an hour, a Southern California Edison spokesman said. The rest were expected to have their service returned later in the night, perhaps within an hour of the 9:08 p.m. accident.

The blackout area was bordered roughly by the Garden Grove Freeway to the north, Broadway to the west, Poinsettia Street to the south and Lincoln Avenue to the east.

Santa Ana police said they had little information Friday night on the traffic accident that sparked the blackout. Paramedics were not called to the scene, police said, and injuries--if any--did not appear to be serious. The name of the driver was not available.
