VENTURA : Council OKs $55,000 for Pier Artwork
The Ventura City Council has agreed to pay a San Francisco artist $55,000 to design artwork for the restoration of the 119-year-old Ventura Pier.
The council voted unanimously Monday to commission artist Ned Kahn to design and install an outdoor artwork as part of $3.5 million of renovations planned for the pier.
Kahn, who designs exhibits for the San Francisco Exploratorium science museum, is expected to present preliminary ideas for the artwork to the Parks and Recreation Department by early May, said Mary Lou Schill, a department spokeswoman.
Schill said Kahn’s fee and the scope of the project he designs could be increased if the city receives any part of a $50,000 grant it is seeking from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Kahn, chosen from among 46 artists and design teams for the pier project, has designed public art projects for the new Phoenix Airport and the San Francisco County Jail.
