1 Sailor Killed, 1 Hurt in Motorcycle Crash
One San Diego-based sailor was killed and another was injured Sunday when the speeding motorcycle they were riding slammed into a guardrail, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Names, ages and hometowns of the sailors were withheld pending notification of relatives.
The accident occurred about 5 p.m. Sunday, on the ramp leading from California 52 to southbound Interstate 5, officers said. Hurtling through the curve at 80 or 90 m.p.h., the driver lost control and the motorcycle crashed into the right-side guardrail, tossing both riders from the motorcycle, officers said.
The passenger died about two hours later at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, officers said. The driver’s condition was uncertain late Sunday night at the hospital, a nursing supervisor said.
Helmets were strapped to the side of the motorcycle, officers said.
