BLACK GOLD: Historical buffs want to mark the spot where Huntington Beach’s oil wealth became dramatically known 71 years ago (B1). The only problem is that the owner plans a housing development on the site. . . . The gusher at “Reservoir Hill,” on Clay Avenue near Golden West Street, proved that rivers of oil ran beneath the city. But the well was capped earlier this year. . . . Jerry Person, chairman of the city’s Historic Resources Board, says that despite the Huntington Beach Co. plans for housing, his group hopes for “a small park” and plaque to mark the spot.
