San Diego State Tennis Team Rolls Past San Jose State
Ricardo Herrera defeated Brian Eagle, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to lead San Diego State to a 5-1 men’s tennis victory over San Jose State. Joe McDonough, Kerry Safdie, Dax Peterson and George Husack also won for the Aztecs (14-6), who dropped out of the top 25 this week. They were replaced at No. 25 by Fresno State. The Spartans are 10-6.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
SDSU defeated UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, in a nonconference match at SDSU’s East Courts. Eva Olivarez defeated Tracie Johnstone, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 singles as the Aztecs took four of six singles matches. Dorey Brandt, Nicolo Storto and Susan Hawke also won for No. 15 SDSU (10-7). The Gauchos are 12-11 and unranked.
MEN’S GOLF
SDSU finished the second round of the Grand Canyon University Invitational one stroke behind tournament leader UC Irvine after carding a team-total 292 for the second day in a row at the Wigwam West golf course in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The Aztecs were alone in second place behind the Anteaters, 583-584. The University of San Diego is 10th and Point Loma Nazarene tied for 14th after two rounds.
SDSU’s Tim Todd was tied for fifth, four strokes off the pace, after shooting a par 72 for the second consecutive day. PLNC’s Rusty Fallin (71) and SDSU’s Mike Jun (74) were tied in 13th position at three-over-par 147.
