NEWBURY PARK : Boy Finds Bomb, Explosive Materials
Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the discoveries of a pipe bomb in a Newbury Park motel and a duffel bag of explosive materials in Thousand Oaks, authorities said Tuesday.
No one has been arrested in the incidents, which are believed to be unrelated, Sheriff’s Detective Joe Braga said.
A live bomb was discovered at 11:23 a.m. Monday by a maintenance man repairing a room that had been vandalized earlier in the E-Z8 Motel at 2434 W. Hillcrest Drive in Newbury Park, Braga said.
The Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was notified after the maintenance man found the device in a drawer, he said. The squad took the bomb to a bunker in Camarillo, where it was disarmed, Braga said.
Braga said it had not been determined whether the bomb had any relation to the earlier vandalism of the room, which included a door kicked in and holes punched in walls.
Later Monday, materials used for building pipe bombs were discovered at 8:30 p.m. by a teen-age boy walking his dogs in the hills above Sunset Hills Boulevard in Thousand Oaks, Braga said.
The boy found a duffel bag, opened it and saw what appeared to be explosives. He picked up part of a homemade pipe bomb and carried it home to his father, who notified authorities, Braga said.
The department has no motive in either incident, Braga said.
