NORTH TUSTIN : School Plans Quake Drill and Program

As part of California Earthquake Preparedness Month, Arroyo Elementary School will sponsor two disaster-preparedness events on Thursday.

In the first event, at 1:30 p.m., students will conduct a mock disaster drill.

“We’re going to fake an earthquake. The only thing is we can’t move the building,” said Arroyo Principal Gerry Aust. “The kids will drop, cover and hold, and then evacuate the building.”

Some students and teachers will play roles of the injured and dead as the school goes through a full-scale emergency drill, Aust said.

“At 2 p.m., parents can come and pick up their children to try to make it as realistic as possible,” Aust said. “We will have them go through the checkout procedure.”

Other schools in the county have held similar disaster drills in the past, and Aust said Arroyo school officials thought it would help students and teachers prepare for a real disaster.

In the second event of the day, Arroyo will hold an Earthquake Preparedness Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. in its multipurpose room and library at 11112 Coronel Road in North Tustin.

Exhibitors will be on hand to display water containers, special keys to turn off water and gas and show other supplies needed in a catastrophe.
