Chula Vista
A 64-year-old woman was killed Tuesday when she ran into the path of a vehicle while apparently trying to cross a street, police reported.
Maria P. Baluyot, a Tierrasanta resident, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center after the 7 a.m. accident. She died less than two hours later, said John Armendariz of the coroner’s office.
Witnesses said Baluyot had just gotten off a bus and failed to check for oncoming traffic before darting across Palomar Street, about 50 yards east of the nearest crosswalk at 2nd Avenue, said Officer Dennis Dodge of the Chula Vista Police Department.
A car headed east on Palomar Street struck Baluyot, Dodge said, adding that the driver’s vision may have been impaired by bright sunlight, which was at eye level at the time of the accident.
