LIFE’S A BEACH: Not all wealthy cities lost population from 1980 to 1990 (A1). Newport Beach, where the average household income is estimated at $88,658 a year, gained. . . . A city planner said census figures put the city up more than 3,000 people, to 66,643. “When people think of Newport Beach, they think of a lot of big, expensive houses,” says the planner. “But there’s really a lot of rental units down here.” And when the rentals fill up, the population goes up.
