K mart Project Gets Tentative OK
The Inglewood City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to the construction of a K mart store east of the San Diego Freeway on a 7.3-acre plot that holds a scattering of small homes and apartments.
Council members said the store at Hillcrest and La Cienega boulevards will provide about 120 jobs and an economic boost to the city. The 102,000-square-foot retail store with an 8,500-square-foot garden shop is “psychologically important for this community,” Councilman Jose Fernandez said.
K mart must submit building plans and acquire construction permits before work can begin.
Meanwhile, Bill Eisen, a Manhattan Beach resident who owns three small houses on the property, complained to the council that the city is not offering fair market value for the properties in its eminent domain proceedings. Eisen is the spokesman for eight property owners who say they will challenge the project in court.
